AC Not Working Properly? 3 Common Reasons Why

A broken air condition is something that no homeowner wants to deal with on a hot summer day. Unfortunately, that's exactly when your home's air conditioning will be more likely to break. You'll be pushing the appliance to its limits trying to get the most use out of it, and you could find yourself with an air conditioner that is out of commission. Here are 3 common reasons why an air conditioner isn't working.

AC Won't Power On

Were you enjoying cold air one moment in your home, only for it to suddenly stop without much warning? The fix might actually be a very simple one. If the other parts of your home have electricity that still works, inspect the fuse box to see if breakers were tripped due to being overloaded. All that might need to be done to get the AC running again is flipping the breaker back on. If the breaker frequently trips the nit may require having a new breaker installed on that circuit.

AC Won't Produce Cold Air

Is the air conditioning turning on with the air that is coming out of the vents feeling warm? This problem indicates there is an issue with the condenser's air intake. Head outside and take a look at the condenser unit. Are the air intakes that surround it covered with debris? All that may need to be done is clear out what is blocking the path of air to the unit.

Another simple reason for cold air is a clogged air filter. The filter would be obstructing the flow of air and causing air to be warm by the time it finally makes it through. Replace your filter with a brand new one and see if that does the trick.

The AC Is Noisy

You're most likely familiar with the normal amount of noise that an air conditioner makes. In fact, you probably don't even hear it when you're inside and all of the doors and windows are shut. Pay attention to the noises though if the condenser suddenly starts to sound like a washing machine that is on its spin cycle.

A squealing sound means that there is a problem with the air conditioner's air handler. While it is supposed to circulate and direct air in your home, this part simply sees plenty of wear from years of use. Noise can be caused due to a damaged belt that is keeping the unit running.
